29th European Film Awards - Long List

It is with great pleasure that the European Film Academy and EFA Productions announce the titles of the 50 films on this year’s EFA Feature Film Selection, the list of feature fiction films recommended for a nomination for the European Film Awards 2016!

With 33 European countries represented, the list once again illustrates the great diversity in European cinema.

In the 20 countries with the most EFA Members, these members have voted one national film directly into the selection list. To complete the list, a Selection Committee consisting of EFA Board Members and invited experts Péter Bognár (Hungary), Dave Calhoun (UK), Paz Lazaro Barquilla (Spain), Christophe Leparc (France) and Alik Shpilyuk (Ukraine) has included further films.

In the coming weeks, the over 3,000 members of the European Film Academy will vote for the nominations in the categories European Film, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenwriter. The nominations will then be announced on 5 November at the Seville European Film Festival in Spain. A 7-member jury will decide on the awards recipients in the categories European Cinematographer, Editor, Production Designer, Costume Designer, Hair & Make-up Artist, Composer and Sound Designer.

The 29th European Film Awards with the presentation of the winners will take place on 10 December in Wroclaw, European Capital of Culture 2016.

Have some not-so-positive reactions to the long list as even when has many films that truly deserve to be honored, there is ONE film that I highly enjoyed that is not in list and yes, the absence upsets me. Grrr. Nevertheless hope film continues to be honored in different ways, like for example, one of the producing countries sends it to Oscars 2017 foreign-language category. Sigh

29th European Film Awards - Documentary Selection

It is with great pleasure that the European Film Academy and EFA Productions announce the EFA Documentary Selection, a list of 15 European documentaries recommended for a nomination for this year's European Film Awards.

Last year the European Academy changed the procedure to select the nominations in the documentary category and process became similar to the selection of short films nominees with ten (10) documentary festival recommending to EFA committee one film each which had its world premiere at the festival latest edition.

Chosen in co-operation with the European Documentary Network EDN, these festivals are:

IDFA (Netherlands)
CPH:DOX (Denmark)
Visions du Réel (Switzerland)
DokLeipzig (Germany)
Docslisboa (Portugal)
Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival (Greece)
Jihlava (Czech Republic)
Cinéma du Réel (France)
Krakow Film Festival (Poland)
Sheffield Doc/Fest (UK)

Based on their recommendations and the films individually submitted, the documentary committee, consisting of EFA Board Members Vanessa Henneman (Netherlands), Roberto Cicutto (Italy), and Marek Rozenbaum (Israel), documentary filmmaker Alexander Nanau (Romania) and documentary expert Paul Pauwels (European Documentary Network, Belgium) decided on the EFA Documentary Selection.

Most interesting is to realize that awards organizers in general are announcing earlier this year and EFA is no exception. Had to go back to find when EFA announced the doc selection and was last September, so in 2016 it's almost a month earlier. As a matter of fact this selection is announced before the most expected EFA long list! Not complaining as me, for one, enjoy to have more time to analyze and watch (if I haven't) the films before the nominations are selected.

Here are the fifteen (15) documentary films that made the 2016 EFA Selection.

21 x Nowy Jork (21 x New York), Piotr Stasik, Poland
A Family Affair, Tom Fassaert, Nehterlands and Belgium
Bella e Perduta (Lost and Beautiful), Pietro Marcello, Italy
Bref Manuel de libération (We'll Be Alright), Alexander Kuznetsov, France
Den unge Zlatan (Becoming Zlatan), Fredrik and Magnus Gertten, Sweden, Netherlands and Italy
Déjà vu, Jon Bang Carlsen, Denmark
Ein deutsches Leben (A German Life), Christian Krönes, Olaf S. Müller, Roland Schrotthofer and Florian Weigensamer, Austria
Europe, She Loves, Jan Gassmann, Switzerland and Germany
Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea), Gianfranco Rosi, Italy and Germany
Herr von Bohlen, André Schäfer, Germany
Mallory, Helena Třeštíková, Czech Republic
Mr. Gaga, Tomer Heymann, Israel, Sweden, Germany and Netherlands
Ο Πιο Μακρύς Δρόμος O Pio Makris Dromos (The Longest Run), Marianna Economou, Greece
Событие Sobytie (The Event), Sergei Loznitsa, Netherlands and Belgium
The Land of the Enlightened, Pieter-Jan De Pue, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands and Germany

My spontaneous reaction to the selection is one that goes to the very-surprising side as yes, selection has some well-known docs like the 2016 Golden Bear winner or the one from one of my most favorite contemporary directors, Sergei Loznitsa; but was unaware of those films by photographers (one seems to be really disturbing BUT officially "I'm dying" to see it!) and yes definitively very interested in doc about the choreographer. Info about each film is not yet at official site but know soon will be here.

Will find info, trailer and poster for each film and will post links.
Check available info and trailers @MOC
Check available posters at my Pinterest

EFA Members will now vote for five documentary nominations. Based on these nominations, the EFA Members will then elect the ‘European Documentary 2016’ which will be announced during the awards ceremony on 10 December in Wroclaw, European Capital of Culture 2016.

66th Berlin International Film Festival Award Winners

Post is being updated LIVE as winners are announced.

Will be updating LIVE the winners. Red Carpet starts in about 30 minutes, one and half hours later awards ceremony (7:00pm local time).

Will leave here some figures that make me wonder if they're accurate or not: 434 Films, 9 Juries, 124 Prizes..The figures at the #Berlinale2016 Figures come from a tweet at Berlinale official twitter account. Have to check if there will be 124 awards here!!!

The awards ceremony is over and have to say that as expected Gianfranco Rosi won the Golden Bear for his film Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea).  Now he has a Golden Bear and a Golden Lion, could he get the Golden Palm? Should research how many directors have the three top golden awards as to me achievement sounds similar to the American EGOT.

There are three awards that made me very happy as absolutely approve everything by Thomas Vinterberg and directing outstanding Trine Dyrholm must have been extraordinary; don't need to say but will say, Kollektivet is must-be-seen for me. Have seen almost everything by Mia Hansen-Løve as she is one of my favorite contemporary directors in the world (not only in French cinema); very glad she was honored for her work in L'Avenir. Last, but not least, I'm always puzzled and mesmerized by the work of Lav Diaz and know that will have to prepare to watch his 8 hours masterpiece, perhaps do as Dieter Kosslick said, watch early morning after, take a nap. But I'm really happy he was honored for his masterpiece Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis.

Auf Wiedersehen! Hope to see you all in 2017.

2/19/16
Today we started the very long post with all the 2016 Berlinale awards. Post will be In Progress until after the awards ceremony.

According to what happened in previous years most indicator have been mostly wrong (lol!) as obviously what film pundits predict has very little to do with jurors who usually are not film critics. Well this year main jury has a film critic so perhaps predictions and reality could be closer that ever before. Nevertheless, let's take a look to what could happen tomorrow.

Neil Young's predictions give the Golden Bear to Mia Hansen-Løve's Things to Come, the Grand Prix to Téchiné's Being 17 and Alfred Bauer Prize to Lav Diaz's A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery; Director to Gianfranco Rosi for Fire at Sea, Screenplay to Danis Tanović and Bernard-Henri Lévy for Death in Sarajevo and Technical Prize to Mark Lee Ping-bin for Crosscurrent. Acting awards to Majd Mastoura in Hedi and the female ensemble cast in United States of Love. His predictions are very French so easily you can imagine that I approve them, but wonder if an USA lead jury could give several awards to French produced or co produced cinema.

UK Screen International continues to have Gianfranco Rosi's Fire at Sea in the first place with 3.3 score followed by Things to Come, Midnight Special and Hedi with 2.9 each. Then more Continental Europe scores from FIPRESCI critics also give Fire at Sea the highest score (4.33) followed by The Commune by Thomas Vinterberg (3.75) and Things to Come by Mia Hansen-Løve (3.47). By the way, last year's FIPRESCI critics predicted Taxi as the Golden Bear winner and surprise, yes film won; so maybe this year Gianfranco Rosi will add a Golden Bear to his Golden Lion.

Will publish post as there are some already announced winners but section winners, like for example Generation, will have their awards tonight; consequently post will be constantly updated today.

2016 Teddy Awards Winners

Yesterday watched for the first time ever the awards ceremony as there was a live streaming via the German branch of arteTV. My spontaneous reaction was that ceremony needed more organization as presenters had no idea of what to do when they arrived to the podium, award winners were called and not given their award but after they watched a clip of their movie and presenter read the jury statement, etc. Nevertheless it was kind of a surreal experience and was interesting to look how some directors have aged since I last saw them, sigh.

On the positive side believe that showing what seemed like the "finalists" for each award category was interesting and only regret they do not publish them as no, I don't recall them!

Can't deny that this year the film that called most my attention is a gay interest movie and surprise (!) film went to win the top award. Imagine film will be not-really-easy-to-watch but hope is very intense as the story suggests could be. Top winner is Tomcat by Händl Klaus.

Here are the story synopsis followed by the Jury Statement.

Synopsis
Andreas and Stefan live a blissful existence together with their tomcat, Moses. They inhabit a beautiful old house in the vineyards near Vienna and work in the same orchestra as manager and musician. Their passion for music, their large circle of friends and colleagues and their furry companion define the daily lives of the two men. But one morning an unexpected outburst of violence from Stefan shakes their harmonious relationship to its core. From this moment on, scepticism and alienation define their cohabitation and represent an almost insurmountable obstacle. While Stefan is losing the ground beneath his feet, Andreas struggles with his mistrust and his love for Stefan. Following his award-winning debut März (March), in his second film Händl Klaus portrays the expulsion of two lovers from paradise. Demonstrating exceptional sensitivity for the male psyche and for the blind spots in all our personalities, this artistic and poetic ballad tells of the fragility of love. Actors Philipp Hochmair and Lukas Turtur are both born theatre thespians and their naturalistic screen performances are impressive.

Statement of the Jury
Featuring a standout performance by a cat, Kater (Tomcat) uses its furry star to expose the violence lurking under the surface of a seemingly idyllic life. Surprisingly not a lesbian film, the story portrays a genuine and sensitive love between men rarely depicted on screen. Writer/director Händl Klaus and his team bring together masterful editing, beautiful cinematography, and great performances from the human cast to create an atmosphere of suspense. The result is a gripping, puzzling, and thought-provoking film that will stick with you long after you leave the cinema.

Also find very interesting the documentary winner, Kiki by Sara Jordenö as film is kind of a follow-up to outstanding 1990 Paris is Burning as provides an insight into the world of today's black LGBT community by taking a look at the balls where participant voguing competitions but in contrast to the time when Paris is Burning was made, these balls are no longer born of a subculture but instead organized by queer youth welfare organizations.   In a way Kiki let's us know how society changes in 25 years and perhaps is not a change that many could predict, expect or like to happen.

If you wish to read the jury statement for all winners at the official site go here. Winners are in *BLUE.

The Opening Ceremony was long, very long and started late, quite late as the opening film crew came late to the theater. Nevertheless I highly enjoy Ange Engelke's dry/black German humor and this was not an exception as laugh quite hard several times. She's very funny lady. Most impressive was the standing ovation Meryl Streep had just when Ange mentioned her name, later the audience calmed itself and when she was on stage, ovation still was loud. I'm in awe of my own reactions to Meryl Streep being the Jury president as tend to be different to what I felt with the presence of extraordinary directors; is like is "normal" for a director to be the jury president, it's "normal" for male/female actors be jury president, BUT it is not normal for Meryl Streep to be a jury president! LOL! Believe I'm not alone with that or similar feeling. Sigh.

As in every festival opening ceremony the best part are the film clips and this time there were three segments with all the films in the selection, in and out of competition. Caught at least 2 films that suggest will have great visuals, which makes me very happy as know they have become must-be-seen for me.

So, #Berlinale2016 is open and the great cinema feast is just starting with great films in the Selection as well as in the other festival sections.

Hail, Caesar! by Coen Brothers

As we know the movie had its premiere a couple of days ago in New York, so there are lots of reviews from that premiere that got promoted yesterday as "to remain" us there is no need to talk again about the movie. My spontaneous perception is that film press did not enjoyed much the movie; but, in general, seems that film got a wide range of evaluations that travel the good to bad scale, with good being a fun-to-watch comedy and bad being not-the-best Coen's oeuvre. Here are some headlines.

The Coen Brothers’ Star-Packed Hail, Caesar! Feels Overdeliberate-David Edelstein, Vulture
The great thing about Hail, Caesar! is that it is fun whether you get all its references or not-Kenneth Turan, LATimes
The Coen brothers deliver a gorgeously crafted romp through vintage Hollywood in this droll and ruminative entertainment-Justing Chang, Variety
Hail, Caesar! is one of those diversions that they turn out in between masterworks and duds. It’s a typically sly, off-center comedy, once again set against the machinery of the motion-picture business-Manohla Dargis-NYT
A dispiritingly vitriolic, only sporadically funny satire of ’50s Hollywood, Hail, Caesar! verifies a suspicion long held here, that the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, really hate the movies-John Anderson, Wall Street Journal
The brothers' latest also has a certain buoyancy...The fizziness, though, proves fleeting, and Hail, Caesar! too often goes flat-Melissa Anderson, Village Voice

French Films at #Berlinale2016

A few days back Unifrance published at their official site an article that listed the French (majority and minority) productions at #Berlinale2016. As many of you know, I LOVE French cinema, so the easiest way to uncover the films is to copy and paste the article here for our present and future reference, as most films absolutely are must-be-seen for me.

What follows is the article. If you wish to read it at Unifrance official site please go here.

French cinema will be in the spotlight at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival, to be held February 11 through 20, 2016, with three majority-French productions in competition (along with three minority co-productions) and two films presented out of competition.

The directors André Téchiné (whose film The Witnesses was previously shown in competition in Berlin in 2007), Mia Hansen-Løve (in the competition section for the first time this year), and Danis Tanovic (whose film An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker was presented at Berlin in 2013) are behind the three films solely or majority-produced by France that are included in the Official Competition at Berlin this year.

In addition to this, the Out of Competition section will feature world premieres of two eagerly-anticipated films: Saint Amour by Gustave Kervern and Benoît Delépine, starring Gérard Depardieu and Benoît Poelvoorde, and News from Planet Mars by Dominik Moll, starring François Damiens.

The lineup for the festival's Panorama and Generation sections will be announced at a later late.

The Forum section, which serves as an independent platform for discovering new talent at the Berlinale, will showcase 44 films this year, including 10 titles crediting France as a co-production partner. Guillaume Nicloux will present his intriguing fantasy thriller The Wandering, which reunites the director with lead actor Gérard Depardieu, while Eugène Green will reveal his latest offering Le Fils de Joseph, featuring Mathieu Amalric.

66th Berlinale Complete Lineup

Finally today the post is ready with all the main sections: Competition,  Berlinale Special, Panorama, Forum, Generation, Perspektive Deutches Kino, Berlinale Shorts, NATIVe, Retrospective & Homage and Culinary Cinema. You will also find links to Talent Campus, European Film Market & Co-production Market and World Cinema Fund. There are a few more sections that didn't make it to the post, like Berlinale Classics but you can check them at the official site or use the info in the following paragraph.

If you wish to learn about any movie in the festival in a VERY FAST and clean way then my best suggestion is to download the fest app.  Very nice Berlinale 2016 app works on iphone and ipad. In the ipad photos and videos are amazing!  Imagine app is also available in other op's.

After checking info about ALL of the below films my head is overflowing with too-much information; then perhaps more interesting is the fact that among the messy clutter there are some films that stand out.

No doubt that most of the films in the main competition seem to be interesting but the ones that are must-be-seen for me are the ones by Denis Côté, Lav Diaz, Thomas Vinterberg, Mia Hansen-Løve, Jeff Nichols and André Téchiné as I see "everything" by them. Then I'm very-curious about the work of Vincent Pérez as a director as well as the film by Michael Grandage starring Colin Firth, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and more.  From the rest I hope some films surprise us, specially the four-women story by Tomasz Wasilewski and most of all, the "visual poetry" that Crosscurrent by Yang Chao seems to have.

No doubt that the jury lead by Meryl Streep will have a great cinema feast and when the time to decide which films gets what, will be not an easy task.  Not a surprise for you all to learn that I'm very curious to find what Streep could like but there are other very strong-personality females in the jury, so wonder if there could be a female-consensus (lol) and if men in the jury will play the mediators (lol!).

Can't deny that what calls most my attention from the Berlinale Special section are a couple of TV Series ( especially Susanne Bier's The Night Manager) and the film by Pernilla August. Berlinale Panorama brings us quite a few films that could be great, starting with the great selection of films from South American directors, followed by films from great Ira Sachs, Doris Dörrie, Emir Baigazin, and Bouli Lanners. Most curious about the opening film but know the story has to be not-pleasant-to-watch as there is nothing pleasant about the "last woman to be publicy excecuted in Czechoslovakia".

Berlinale Forum is confusing and not easy to classify, which obviously makes it very interesting to those that enjoy non-traditional genres and experimental cinema.  Still there are some films like Adrian Sitaru's Illegitimate, Bence Fliegauf's Lily Lane, and the 177 minutes film Chamissos Schatten by Ulrike Ottinger (original work is 12 hours) that have very-well-known directors and yes, are must-be-seen for me.

Berlinale Generation always surprises me and 2016 edition is no exception as there are some films that tickle my interest and make me wish to know more before deciding to watch or skip them. Still the film that obviously is must be seen for me is Rara by Pepa San Martín.

So this is a brief summary of what spontaneously recall from what I've been doing for the last two (2) weeks. Know that during and after the festival more films will pop-up for us to consider watching them or not.

There is one thing that still have to figure out and hope organizers publish an official list. I'm talking about the First Feature award; we know the jurors and that there are 18 films, but we still do not know the films. Below have 19 films I learned were first feature film for the director, but not only there is one more but not sure if those are the ones that qualify according to fest rules. As soon as find out will do a specific post and fix here the (*) to the correct ones.

After each section there are links to available trailers and info about the films in the section. If you wish to see #Berlinale2016 in a very-visual way, then check the available film posters here.

Was a long-work but finally the post has become final!

---///---
1/21/16

NATIVe
With mixed feelings this year’s NATIVe is saying goodbye to last year’s focus on Latin America and welcoming the Arctic as next year’s geographical focus. In the 2016 NATIVe programme, which will bridge the gap between the two editions, one film will represent each of these regions. They will provide the impetus to carry on the journey into the far north.

El abrazo de la serpiente (Embrace of the Serpent), Ciro Guerra, Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina, 2015
Qapirangajuq: Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change, Zacharias Kunuk and Ian Mauro, Canada, 2010

Comments from first posting on 1/21/16

The official press conference hasn't happen yet, but organizers have been publishing since the end of last year -and drop by drop-, the films that make the Competition, Panorama, Forum, Generation, Perspektive Deutsches Kino, Berlinale Shorts, Berlinale Special, NATIVe and more festival sections.

No doubt that the best news the festival offers this year is not about the movies but about one particular juror, the International Jury President! Berlinale 2016 big achievement is having persuaded Meryl Streep to be part of a festival jury for the very first time in her very-long and illustrious career. On top and according to US industry publications, she will give a Masterclass to the 300 emerging film professionals taking part in this year's Berlinale Talents program. Know that I will enjoy all the nitty gritty that will surround her during the festival.

The Program Press Conference for the 66th Berlin International Film Festival will be held on February 2, 2016, at 11.00 am in the Press and Information Office of the German Federal Government. This post will be updated after the press conference to become final IF we learn that all films in each section have been announced.

Still to start the fest-fun will publish what we know up-to-today press release that informs the Competitive section is complete.
